South County hired head football coach Gerry Pannoni last summer to replace Pete Bendorf, the school’s first and only head coach up until that point. Bendorf’s untimely departure reportedly left school officials scrambling to find a replacement as quickly as possible. The Stallions hired Panonni in late July, which put the team and its coaches in the unenviable position of working with an abbreviated timeframe of installing and learning new offensive and defensive systems and left many wondering if the Stallions would be able to adapt fast enough to be competitive. To say that the team …
Seven years after fielding its first crew team, South County will send 15 rowers to compete in the National Scholastic Rowing National Championships this Friday and Saturday New Jersey. The program, started by current head coach Mary King, enjoyed its most successful season to date and its rowers hope to end it win an impressive showing in the national competition. King was first introduced to the sport as an adult and fell in love with it immediately. And it wasn’t too long after that she caught the urge to coach the sport. After various stops at programs around the region, she settled in at…
South County’s Oren and Whitney Burks no longer have space on their calendar - literally. They used to keep track of their schedules in a calendar that their parents bought for them, but as the pair grew, more events meant less space. And eventually, the family ditched the physical calendar all together for a more streamlined method. “We used to have a calendar that we entered all of their information into so that we could know where everyone was going to be,” said Orlanda Burks, the children's father. “That got a little difficult because things wouldn’t fit and ink started to bleed on the …
Hayfield Secondary School's baseball team ended last season the way it began—on fire. The Hawks started the year with a seven-game win streak, scoring 10 or more runs in four of the team’s first seven games. Hayfield cruised through its regular season schedule and won the school’s second-ever district title as the Hawks defeated Yorktown 17-16 in the National District championship. This season, Hayfield (8-5) currently sits at 7-2 in National District play and is determined to prove that last year’s success was hardly a fluke. “While we did win districts last season, we only had two guys …
South County Football (0-3): South County scored a season high 27 points in their 31-27 September 16 loss at West Potomac (2-1). The Stallions got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Oren Burks returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Shane Foley threw touchdown passes of 55 and 19 yards to wide receivers Andrew Rector and Michael Ferguson. Still seeking their first win of the season, the Stallions return home this Friday, September 23, after two road games to face T.C. Williams (1-2). South County’s chances look good as T.C. Williams is nursing a two game …
The ever infamous two-a-day practices are underway at South County Secondary and Stallion football players are knee-deep in preparation for the upcoming season. This year however, a new head coach will roam the sidelines on Friday nights. Gerry Pannoni replaced Pete Bendorf late last month, who until that time had been the school’s first and only coach. Despite his late summer hire, Pannoni has already made strides in winning over South County players.  “Everybody has jumped on Coach Pannoni’s boat. We’re really looking forward to the season and think that a lot of great things are going to …
