Fresh veggies galore!
The Lorton Farmer's Market is back! Patch was there on Sunday to ask Lorton residents about this week's Lorton Perspective question, and also got a few good shots. It was a beautiful day - perfect for Mother's Day, and we were wondering if anyone else got pictures from that day. If so, add them to this article! By the way, if you're out this Sunday, stop on by the market. There, you'll find these vendors: Follow Lorton Patch on Facebook at facebook.com/lortonpatch and keep up with all things Lorton by receiving the free Patch email newsletter.

How have I been preparing? By eating fast food, soda and candy non-stop.
Things are great! For the past week, impending prohibition has energized me with a fervor to scarf down fistfuls of candy, soda and as many processed foods as possible. Today, in fact, I had 10 chicken McNuggets, fries and a Coke, and it was absolutely delicious (and cheap!). Last night, I played poker with some buddies and drank beer and ate milk chocolate with a face of stone and watched my pile of chips fluctuate from plush to non-existent. Yes, I lost at poker, but the candy soothed my injured pride. I've savored every bite and sip, because this Sunday, everything will change. Sunday, May 13, marks the start date for the five-week Paleo Diet Challenge at CrossFit Liberation, and it means the end of all processed foods, sugar, soda and …

Are you ready for Mother's Day?
In recognition of Mother's Day, Gunston Flowers has extended their hours of service. That means that you still have a chance to dash over to the Lorton flower shop to spend a few bucks on the person who brought you into this crazy world. No doubt she'll receive the flowers with a genuine smile, and will think to herself: "What a good kid. This is my day after all!" Mother's Day weekend is the busiest time of the year for Gunston Flowers. "This is the big one," said owner Peter Chabra. ""Everybody's got a mother." Chabra and his staff are hurriedly filling orders and delivering flowers to doorsteps. "The reality is, though, that the local flower shop is on the verge of becoming extinct because there are so many ways to get flowers online," …

Costco Wholesale will take the place of the old movie theater on Richmond Highway.
The demolition of Mount Vernon Multiplex Cinema is nearly complete, paving the way for a new Costco Wholesale. Preliminary work on the future Richmond Highway home of Costco began in April. The store is slated to open sometime in 2013. It will cover more than 143,000 square feet. Costco closed on the 12-acre site on Jan. 9. In its traffic-impact analysis submitted to the Fairfax County Planning Commission, Costco analysts predicted that 737 new peak-hour trips on Saturday and 4,496 new daily trips on weekdays would occur after completion of the store. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, Richmond Highway handles about 60,000 vehicles per day.

Got time for a relaxing cruise? This local business offers regular weekend tours on the water from Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton.
Every weekend of the year, Rivershore Charters cruises along the scenic Occoquan River. The 50-foot pontoon touring boat can hold 46 passengers—all of whom can see birds of prey, get dropped off at local restaurants and receive a lesson in Occoquan history. Meet the Captain There's no doubt about it. One of the best decisions Captain Mark Perry ever made was buying the 16,000-pound water taxi named the "Harbor Lady" in 2004, he said. The 57-year-old Perry worked as a real estate agent since 1976, and found his calling after talking with the owner of Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant & Crabhouse in Dumfries. "I'm a boater and spend 300 days out of the year on the water," Perry told Patch on a recent cruise. "The only time I take the boat out of…

New map feature includes drop-down menu for Blackberry users.
The Virginia Railway Express recently debuted changes to the mapping feature in its Rail Time system, a program used by riders to track the whereabouts of trains on the Manassas and Fredericksburg Lines. VRE officials were prompted to make the change to Rail Time after Microsoft canceled MapPoint—the mapping feature Rail Time used—in December, VRE spokesman Mark Roeber said this week. Microsoft customers like VRE were then required to migrate to Bing in order to continue providing maps for services like Rail Time, he said. VRE made the changes available to the public this week after converting its account to Bing and making some changes to its scripts and code so the Bing maps can work well with the system. Officials said the 9-year-old …

Monthly electric charges could drop to an average of $105 per household by September.
Gas prices may be going up, but cost of electricity, at least for Dominion Power customers, is dropping. The average household electricity bill is expected to drop to $105.90 in September, the company says, a 5.7 percent decrease from January 2012. The calculation is based on the an average use of 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The drop is owed largely to a decrease in Dominion's fuel rate. The proposed fuel rate is 2.706 cents per kilowatt-hour – a decrease of approximately 18 percent from the current fuel rate of 3.289 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. The adjustment is the lowest the company has proposed since 2007, Anderson said. It will result in an annual fuel revenue reduction of $388 million. In a company …

Week 7 and I'm still alive!
The Box nearly killed me on Monday and I actually had my first CrossFit nightmare as a result. In my dream, I couldn't pull up a bar sans weight and everyone was watching me while eating Sour Patch Kids. At one point, someone told me I could have some water, but only if I ate a handful of yellow and green ones. I woke up exhausted (with a busted-up right hand to boot) and my body felt like I'd just been thrown into a room full of angry Kung Fu experts. CrossFit Week 7 If you didn't see me at CrossFit Liberation this week it was because I was crawling to the finish line every day after work. As a machine, my body has been running pretty non-stop for a while, and it was Monday's WOD that temporarily destroyed me. The following workout took…
