Long-Awaited Road Projects Near Completion

This summer Virginia Megaprojects -- the biggest series of large-scale transportation improvements in the state -- nears completion of two major projects and marks the start of construction on new projects.

On the Capital Beltway, the 495 Express Lanes project that runs 14 miles between the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road, will open this winter. Through the summer, crews will finish paving ramps, installing toll facilities and testing equipment.  Motorists will continue to see lane improvements.

Vehicles carrying three or more persons will be able to use the lanes for free. To do this, motorists must outfit their vehicles with the new E-ZPass Flex which has a switch to indicate if there are three or more passengers aboard. The E-ZPass Flex will be available this summer.

The Telegraph Road Interchange is nearly complete as well. Throughout the remainder of 2012, motorists will see lane shifts on the beltway and lane configurations on Telegraph Road completed.

On the Fairfax County Parkway in Springfield, a new overpass opened in April to increase the access to relocated Rolling Road. Crews are putting finishing touches on the northern end limits of the project, and all work is slated for completion in July.

New projects getting underway include a ramp from the 95 HOV lanes directly to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency in Ft. Belvoir North. This ramp is expected to be completed mid 2014.

Also getting underway at the Mark Center are short term improvements including median removal and lane modifications on Seminary Road and Beauregard Street. These improvements are expected to be completed in 2013. An $80 million ramp linking the 395 HOV lanes to Seminary Road will be completed in late 2015.

At this point, some sort of wishful thinking would like to will the Telegraph Road to completion. The work on the new shopping center whick is supossed to contain the new Wegman's Grocery store is within the immediate area of the new road. I suppose that the construction of the shopping center is taking first place over the variouls tie-ins over the completion of the completion of the Telegraph Road. Once more the road work has stopped. Cuts and fill in of the ends of the road are to the point of bare dirt packed down and the machinery is gone or parked on the segment disappearing east. Haven't seen or heard of the eastern end being worked on or its ultimate place of beginning on US 1. Maybe some good faery will wave a magic wand and the road will show up bright and shiny for such leaders of Northern Virginia will bless its opening.

Work on Telegraph Road is progressing. The stretch south of Hayfield Secondary School down to Beulah Street is being widened from 2 to 4 lanes and will be completed before Mulligan Road and Wegman's open. Here's a link to the projects' overview and timeline -http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/telegraph_and_mulligan_roads.asp

Sorry, Nancy-Jo - statement says the URL is incorrect. Probably should be slashes rather than underlines. Sally They had dug around on the southbound side that I saw going to the Giant at Hayfield. The idiot roads could have been in place before now if they had made it their business to do so. Myst be someone else's contract rather than the company that made the original cut . Thanks anyway. Regards, Sally
