This summer Virginia Megaprojects -- the biggest series of large-scale transportation improvements in the state -- nears completion of two major projects and marks the start of construction on new projects.

On the Capital Beltway, the 495 Express Lanes project that runs 14 miles between the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road, will open this winter. Through the summer, crews will finish paving ramps, installing toll facilities and testing equipment.  Motorists will continue to see lane improvements.

Vehicles carrying three or more persons will be able to use the lanes for free. To do this, motorists must outfit their vehicles with the new E-ZPass Flex which has a switch to indicate if there are three or more passengers aboard. The E-ZPass Flex will be available this summer.

The Telegraph Road Interchange is nearly complete as well. Throughout the remainder of 2012, motorists will see lane shifts on the beltway and lane configurations on Telegraph Road completed.

On the Fairfax County Parkway in Springfield, a new overpass opened in April to increase the access to relocated Rolling Road. Crews are putting finishing touches on the northern end limits of the project, and all work is slated for completion in July.

New projects getting underway include a ramp from the 95 HOV lanes directly to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency in Ft. Belvoir North. This ramp is expected to be completed mid 2014.

Also getting underway at the Mark Center are short term improvements including median removal and lane modifications on Seminary Road and Beauregard Street. These improvements are expected to be completed in 2013. An $80 million ramp linking the 395 HOV lanes to Seminary Road will be completed in late 2015.
