Workhouse Arts Center artist Megan Peritore has found a new purpose in life: Understanding what it's all about with photography and polymer clay. Many of Peritore's sculptures depict human forms attached to actual pieces of driftwood. The necks are craned skyward, almost longingly. It's as if Peritore is bringing out the character of the driftwood, or at least establishing a spiritual connection. "I like the intercommunication with all living creatures and nature," Peritore told Patch. "We're all made from the same stuff and sometimes I feel quite heartbroken with what we're doing to the material world." The lights, the glamour, the Kennedy Center...
They built sets, sang and danced and moved audiences with their performances. A number of local high school theater students have been nominated in the 14th Annual Cappies Gala awards at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on June 9. The Cappies (the Critics and Awards program) program preps high school theatre and journalism students in the world of theater by publishing their reviews with publications like The Washington Post. At the end of the year, the student critics vote for 200 student winners with 35 awards that are presented at the Gala. Ever find yourself asking "Who am I and what am I doing?" You're not alone.
"Single Married Girl" is the story of becoming yourself again, and it runs this weekend only at the Workhouse Arts Center. The one-woman comedy is based on Laurel Spears' blog The Adventures of a Single Married Girl, which catalogues her three-year search for happiness after leaving a hollow marriage. Heather Bagnall and Luke Tudbell of Tasty Monster Productions in Annapolis, MD, adapted the blog into a 50-minute show. Bagnall, who recently got a divorce in real-life, has found parallels with her main character. "I was working too hard to hide my awesomeness," said Bagnall. The fifth annual festival is July 20 at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.
The fifth annual Clifton Film Festival will need to raise $1,500 in order to operate smoothly. Prizes for donating to its Kickstarter campaign include free tickets to the event and a chance to mingle with the filmmakers and actors. "My favorite part of the festival is to see the kids keep submitting stuff and to see it improve every year," said festival founder Dani Weinberg. "It doesn't take too much to run but any extra money allows us to do new and exciting things to improve the festival." The festival will be held July 20 at the Workhouse Arts Center and will feature dozens of short films, all of which will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen. Workhouse Arts Center artist Denise Philipbar can sing, dance, paint, sculpt and solve math problems that would leave most scratching their heads. She experiments with glass water clocks, robots and hidden video cameras in her art, in addition to painting and sculpting. She also speaks five languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish and English). "If you pick up a second language you realize that there are common patterns with other languages. It's all about patterns. Paintings have abstract patterns and you learn the patterns to make the paintings interesting," said Philipbar in a recent interview with Patch. The nonprofit Metropolitan Performing Arts Alliance dance academy is the Workhouse Arts Center's newest tenant. The remaining artists have been cleared out of building W-4 (three have left for good, one relocated to a new studio on campus), and $350,000 in renovations will begin in May. "Because of the shortfall of venues on campus, our program is lacking in performing arts activities," said John Mason, the Workhouse President and CEO, to Patch.
