What's That Loud Booming Sound in Lorton?

Quantico Marine Corps Base warns of explosive munitions operations taking place Thursday until 9 p.m.

Lorton residents reporting sounds of booming or windows rattling Thursday are likely feeling the explosive munitions operations from Quantico Marine Corps Base, which is headquartered 19 miles south of Lorton off of Interstate 95 in Quantico.

On Thursday, the Marine Corps Base tweeted from its Twitter account: 

"Because we #LOVE you! Explosive munitions operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m today. Happy V Day! #quantico#trainingmarines"

And here's a message from the base' Facebook page:

"Residents in the immediate vicinity of Marine Corps Base Quantico may experience an increase in noise as an affect from training or range clearance operations from Feb 8 – Feb 16.

Monday – Feb. 11. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday – Feb. 12. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday – Feb 13. Explosive Munitions Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday – Feb. 14. Explosive Munitions Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m
Friday – Feb 15. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
Saturday – Feb. 16. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition, the I-95 expansion project will be conducting pile driving operations Monday through Saturday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the month of February.
