Tutors Needed for Pohick Program

Pohick Church hosts students from Gunston ES every Tuesday to help them with school work.

For the 18th year, Pohick Church is sponsoring a tutoring program for area elementary students. On Tuesday evenings, the historic church turns into a classroom, where volunteers help students from Gunston Elementary School with their schoolwork. The program is a partnership between the church and school to help local students who might not receive help elsewhere.

Currently, 27 students are being tutored at Pohick by a few volunteers. Teachers at Gunston ES recommend students for the program who need extra help. There is a wait list of more students who need tutoring, but not enough volunteers to accommodate them. These students cover grades K-6 and need help in basic academic subjects. A majority of the students come from non-English speaking homes, where receiving homework help is especially difficult with the language barrier.

Program Coordinator, Diana York, says "We only need one permanent volunteer at this time, but the more volunteers we have the more students we can help.  We could also really use substitute tutors. We have a list of volunteers who would prefer to not tutor every week, but like being on the sub list." If you would like to volunteer, a full time commitment isn't necessary. Even volunteering one time a month will help this program and local children. Anyone high school age and up is welcome to volunteer. Please contact Diana at snowhill@cox.net to sign up and help with this program.
