2. On this date in 1984, the United Kingdom agreed to hand sovereignty of Hong Kong to the Chinese government. The British took control of the territory in 1898, and the handover was conducted on June 30, 1997. Prince Charles read a farewell letter from Queen Elizabeth at the ceremony.

"No, obviously everybody's got a game plan for everything, but usually if a guy can play he's got a legitimate chance to do what he's capable of doing or else they couldn't have him in there."
