Sydenstricker United Methodist Celebrates 4th With 6,000 Sandwiches For Homeless

They had to stop! They ran out of bread!

Sydenstricker United Methodist Church celebrated the 4th of July by meeting a tough goal: Make 5,000 egg salad and other sandwiches for the D.C.-based Martha's Table food kitchen.

Church members ended up making 6,570 sandwiches before they ran out of bread. The remaining spread was sent along in a gallon jar.

Sydenstricker UMC and other local faith communities make more than 2,000 sandwiches every month for the homeless who receive food at Martha’s Table.

Anyone may participate by donating peeled hard boiled eggs from the Sunday before to the first Wednesday of every month; you may help make and pack sandwiches at 9:30 a.m. in Hottle Hall on the first Wednesday of every month; or you may donate by check, notating "Martha’s Table” in the memo portion of your check.

This was an outstanding effort on part of the ecumenical effort to support Martha's Table under the leadership of Sydenstricker United Methodist Church. The previous high water mark for making sandwiches occurred on 4th Jul 2001 when the faith community came together and made 4,200 sandwiches. Praise the Lord in all His goodness and the blessings He has bestowed on us. Ron Edwards, Chair SUMC Missions Committee
