The South County Athletic Association 7/8th grade girls lacrosse team defeated Stafford 6-5 on Sunday in a back-and-forth championship caliber game that came down to the final seconds.

This was the first girls B division championship for the South County Athletic Association. The 7/8 C team also played in the Tier 1 championship game on Sunday, but came one game short of winning their division championship.

The Colts won in thrilling fashion over the previously undefeated Stafford team.

"We have been knocking on the door for a few years, it was good to finally kick the door in," said Colts Coach Balow after the game. "The girls played with so much heart today and played for each other. I can't be any prouder of a group of athletes."

The game was tied 3-3 at half-time. South County took a 5-3 lead in the second half, but Stafford refused to be put away and scored the tying goal with 1:08 remaining in the game. The draw from center after the tying goal was pivotal to the outcome.

Colt Kristin Rabil was able to draw the ball into the Stafford zone where Hannah Balow battled three Stafford players for possession of the ball and successfully pushed the ball outside to teammate LaReina Rankin. LaReina raced down the sideline and passed to Claire Quigley behind the goal, who spun and passed directly to Callie Glaser on the opposite side of the field behind the goal to set up a one-on-one opportunity. Colt Callie Glaser raced around the goal closely marked by a Stafford defender in the final seconds and fired a low back post shot that beat the Stafford goalie with only about 2 seconds left in the game.

The team, parents and coaches erupted in celebration drowning out the sound of the final buzzer as the Stafford goalie turned to look at the ball in the back of the net. The goal scorers for the South County Colts were Callie Glaser with four goals and one each from Hannah Balow and Hannah Ross.

The South County youth girls program continues to build a strong girls youth lacrosse program. The top girls 5/6th grade B team had another strong season playing in the Tier 1 (top eight) bracket losing to the eventual Tier 1 champion in the playoffs. The 5/6 C team won their Tier 2 (middle eight) bracket championship.
