Lorton Virginia Railway Express Station Platform Extension Project Put Out to Bid

The expansion will allow the station to accomodate eight-car train sets

The Virginia Railway Express Operations Board has approved a proposal to solicit bids for the construction of a 250-foot platform extension at the Lorton VRE Station.

The $5.6 million project is funded by a state grant, a matching grant from Fairfax County and a grant from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program. The addition will join another project at the station - the multi-million dollar second platform. Both projects are anticipated to meet current and future ridership demand.

The Board passed a task order for the design of the extension last May. "The design has been underway and is now substantially complete and in the permitting process with Fairfax County, with no anticipated issues," according to a VRE staff report

The existing 400-foot platform was built in 1992 and can only accommodate five car train sets. The expansion will accommodate eight car train sets.
