Lorton's 2012 National Night Out Events

Keeping our community safe the fun way

National Night Out is back. Are you ready? Lorton residents will host face painting, games and ice cream socials out in front of their homes Tuesday evening as an opportunity to get to know neighbors and local police officers.

Between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, residents are invited to turn on their porch lights and mingle as part of National Night Out. Already, more than 100 communities in Virginia are registered to participate.

The idea behind the event is that if residents get to know each other better, they will be more likely to work together to help keep their neighborhoods safe. The nationwide event began in the 1970s as a way to get people out of their homes and meet each other with the common purpose of making communities safer by raising crime prevention awareness.

The following Lorton communities are hosting National Night Out events:

The Lorton Community Action Center: Lorton Park, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

The Lorton Library: 9520 Richmond Highway, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

The end of Sheffield Village Lane, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Woods of Fairfax: 7630 Fairfield Woods Court, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

It would be better if we, in the various subdivisions could do the same thing on a basis of what we wanted/afford to do.
When I first moved to the subdivision where I have been since 1968, we were more interested in knowing each other. Now? No. I know three people here. One family has been here much longer than I. We are both that much older and don't get around as much. Other than that, I know the people on either side of me and there is no socialing among us. I have stopped my car to speak to those I recognized as living somewhere along here.
Would be very nice if we could meet and generally talk together. Otherwise it is as if I lived in a huge apartment complex. Yes, I recognize the faces in the elevator, and nothing else. Too bad.
