In-Person Absentee Voting Open Saturday

Officials have suggestions for those who had planned to vote Monday or Tuesday as Hurricane Sandy approaches Northern Virginia.

With Hurricane Sandy approaching, voting may be a concern for those who are planning to vote absentee prior to Election Day, which is Nov. 6.

"Safety is our paramount concern," said Merni Fitzgerald, director of Public Affairs for Fairfax County, in an e-mail to Patch.

"Fairfax County is monitoring the weather and preparing for Hurricane Sandy," she said. "We’re asking the community to prepare as well. One way to prepare is to think ahead to eliminate travel during the upcoming storm when roads will be wet and slippery.

"We are following the guidance of the State Board of Elections and also our own Fairfax County emergency and public safety officials," she noted. "If there are any changes to the operating status of the facilities serving as absentee voting locations, we will announce them."

Fitzgerald pointed out that for persons eligible to do in-person absentee voting, there are options if the weather makes it unwise to try to travel to the seven satellite locations or the government center:

  • People who were planning to vote Monday or Tuesday, the days when we could see the heaviest rainfall, could vote Saturday, as all locations are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • People could vote after the storm has moved through the area; they can vote by in-person absentee ballot until Nov. 3.

This impending storm seems like a great argument for allowing early voting (not just absentee voting) in states along the East Coast. Though only absentee voting will be impacted this week, if this was one week later it would hit squarely on election day.

Consider these facts before you vote:
1. Is the economy better off now than it was four years ago? Based on the evidence, I'd have to say no. Wages are down, the the prices of everything we buy is up. The price of gas has doubled. Good jobs are scarce.
2. Are the slight "up tics" in the economy a solid trend in the right direction? I don't think so. First, the gains are very slight. Second, I believe they are the result in the temporary stimulus by the Federal Reserve, in which they printed a lot of new money. It provides a slight bump now, but the cost will come later - after the election. Ben Bernanke is trying to save Obama's job, along with his own.
3. The continual misrepresentation of Romney on the auto bailout by the Obama administration. Obama appears to be taking complete credit for the bailout, while simultaneously saying that Romney was for liquidation of the auto industry. This is an absolute falsehood. It was Bush who initiated the bailout and TARP. Obama continued it and then expanded it, to his credit. However, Romney was one of the first to say that the industry needed to go through bankruptcy reorganization, and eventually they did exactly that. He also said that any needed loans should come from the private sector. He never said that the industry should be liquidated, or that he would deny federal funds if he were president, and private sector funds were not available. Obama lies!
4. The Benghazi coverup and lies.

Or simply consider that nothing in the post above is actually true and it shows the desperation with which the Republican party is willing to deceive people.
