I've had easier weeks. Last Sunday was the official start to the CrossFit Liberation Spring Performace Fitness Challenge, and since then my diet has consisted of water, meat, fruit and veggies and nuts.
If you've followed my recent posts, the Paleo diet sounds pretty healthy, right? It is, but there are consequences for people like me, and eating too much sugar for too long took a toll.
CrossFit Week 9:
Everything was going pretty well until about midway through Monday. All of a sudden around noon I got a terrible headache between my eyes and my energy level went from an 8 to about a 2. The sugar detox was officially on, and the only energy I had was in constantly going to the throne room. I knew this was coming.
Wednesday and Thursday were fun. To combat the headache, sugar urges and occasional dizziness, I resorted to eating apples like mad (incidentally, we should all eat more apples. Why not?), and then switched to oranges. One guy from the Box, Craig Griffith, ate an entire watermelon as a snack.
I'm not alone in my sugar withdrawal. All of us in the five-week challenge are corresponding on Facebook (to vent, share recipes, inspire) and some are feeling the crash worse than others. My advice: drink lots and lots of water and eat protein.
The whole diet seems kind of crazy while you're on it, but you quickly realize that you're actually eating things that you should be eating, like spinach, carrots, apples and enough bacon to make your home smell like a barbecue pit. I love bacon, and since it's on the diet there's no question that the old sweet tooth will have to be fooled with its succulence until this five week challenge is over.
The Modern Caveman
So far, I've been strict since going on this diet. And, as a modern urban hunter and gatherer (of information), my food intake has consisted of the following:
- Fruit - Oranges, apples, blackberries, strawberries
- Nuts - Pistachios, almonds
- Black Coffee
- The occasional piece of dark chocolate - above 70% cacao
- Bacon and scrambled eggs
- Monglian barbecue - not from home
- Roasted chicken and sirloin steaks from Safeway
- Grilled chicken from Fireside Grill
- Sauteed veggies (in coconut oil at a medium temperature) - onions, mushrooms, carrots, green and red bell peppers
So, the sugar crash sucked, basically, but I'm not craving any sugar at the moment. The Paleo Diet, for what it's worth, is a much cleaner lifestyle and I've already felt the difference in the gym.
My head is less foggy and I have more energy and endurance. Take today, for instance: I feel like a wild animal. I'm ready to tear into some CrossFit craziness, and then, most likely into a steak for dinner.
