A two-car accident yesterday morning closed a two-mile stretch of Route 1 north of Telegraph Road for about an hour and-a-half.
According to police a late model Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Route 1 at approximately 9:30 in the morning when the driver attempted to make a u-turn near Britten Road. The car struck a Chrysler 300 traveling southbound on Route 1.
The driver of the Toyota, a female in her early 40s, was taken by helicopter to INOVA Fairfax with a broken leg and minor head injuries. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The driver of the Chrysler, a middle-aged male, was taken by ambulance to INOVA Fairfax with a compound fracture in his ankle.
Police say the driver of the Toyota will be charged with reckless driving.

If you must to avoid waiting when you see you will miss the green left arrow onto Telegraph, you can turn right onto Old Colchester, turn around in Pohick Church lot, then wait for the light to cross Route 1. This is a far far safer way to get a jump on turning onto Telegraph. And with the weird way the light works at the intersection just north of US1, it may not save you any time at all.
I'm pretty sure thay can ticket for U-turns across a visual median attached to a physical median with posted No U-Turn sign. IANAL, but I think visual medians are, in terms of enforcement, part of physical medians they touch.
There should be a physical median to prevent the left turn just north of Telegraph. There is a rather wide yellow diagonal striped visual median, but people frequently ignore it and turn left there anyway even with the traffic light just a bit north for that neighborhood. Or, VDoT or the neighborhood should install one of those right-in/right-out only medians. At the very least, they should paint a large No Left Turn symbol on the wide striped median there.
